Azerbaijan Reacts to Execution of Embassy Attacker in Tehran
WANA (May 21) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has responded to the execution of the individual responsible for the attack on its embassy in Tehran, emphasizing: “We consider the continued joint efforts to develop Azerbaijan-Iran relations based on mutual respect and good neighborliness to be essential.”
The execution of Yasin Hosseinzadeh, who carried out the attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran on January 27, 2023 — resulting in the death of one embassy staff member and injuries to two others — was carried out at 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. The death sentence had been issued on January 28, 2024.

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry stressed: “One of Azerbaijan’s main expectations from the Iranian side was the imposition of the most severe punishment on the individual responsible for this terrorist act. According to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, it remains critically important for the host country to ensure the security of our diplomatic missions and take appropriate steps to prevent such actions.”
The statement concluded by reaffirming: “We believe continued joint efforts to enhance Azerbaijan-Iran relations based on mutual respect and good neighborliness are essential.”
Baku’s renewed emphasis on deepening ties with Tehran comes after Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, stated during the Tehran Dialogue Forum on Sunday afternoon: “We aim to reshape the region through cooperation with Iran, the Russian Federation, and Turkey. The region must be shaped according to our shared interests. The relations between Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey are deeply interwoven.”
In response to a question about the future of Tehran-Baku relations, Hajiyev added: “We are not just neighbors — we are brothers and kin. This relationship has thousands of years of history. We seek to further develop our ties with Iran, and following the highly successful visit of President Pezeshkian to Azerbaijan, the relations between our two countries have entered a new phase.”
He continued: “Good relations with our neighbors are irreplaceable. We are allies with Russia and Turkey and have a strategic partnership with Georgia. We are pursuing change and development in our ties with Tehran and are actively working with our friends in Iran.”
Hajiyev concluded: “We are currently cooperating on several positive and constructive projects with Iran. We view our relations with Iran through a strategic lens. Given Iran’s neighborhood policy and President Pezeshkian’s leadership, bilateral ties will soon reach new levels.”
